CNN —The Biden administration on Thursday moved one step closer to enacting a rule requiring people who sell firearms online and at gun shows to conduct background checks on their potential customers. The finalized rule aims to close what gun control advocates call the “gun show loophole” by increasing the requirements to obtain a federal firearms license, or FFL, by more specifically defining what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. By making the term more definitive, the Justice Department has said it aims to better regulate the market and encourage higher compliance with the federal background check requirement. “I do believe countless families and communities will be spared the horror and the heartbreak of gun violence by this new rule.”The finalized rule, which will appear in the Federal Registry, will go into effect in 30 days. Already, the rule is facing criticism from conservative lawmakers and gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association.

Police responding to the Uvalde, Texas, shooting showed "no urgency," a DOJ report found. Uvalde school district officers arrived within three minutes of Ramos' arrival at the school and ran toward the classroom, but as they approached, Ramos fired from inside the classroom. Later that night, Justice Department officials privately briefed family members at a community center in Uvalde before the findings were made public. Greg Abbott initially praised the courage of officers' response and blame was later cast heavily on local authorities in Uvalde. The 376 officers at the scene included state police, Uvalde police, school officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents.

UVALDE: May 24, 2022 - A man fatally shoots 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas before he was shot dead by Border Patrol agents. PARKLAND: Feb. 14, 2018 - A former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, opens fire with an assault-style rifle, killing 17 students and educators. He is fatally shot by police.

Colorado is no stranger to mass killings. Saturday’s mass shooting in Colorado Springs, in which a gunman killed five people at an LGBTQ club, is just the latest in a string of mass public gun violence in the state. In the past three decades Colorado has seen at least 10 mass killings, including the Columbine High School massacre in 1999 and the Aurora theater shooting in 2012, the two deadliest. Three of those mass killings have happened in the months since March 2021, when a gunman killed 10 at a Boulder grocery store. The latest mass killing happened like many of the others in the state: In a town along Colorado’s Front Range, a man used a semiautomatic firearm to kill.

There is no evidence that any school has deployed litter boxes for students to use because they identify as cats. The rumor of litter boxes in schools appears to have begun among parents on social media, and one of the first schools to confront the falsehood was in Canada last fall. Catalina Lauf, a Republican congressional nominee in Illinois, tweeted this month that schoolchildren were using litter boxes in her state. Some say litter boxes are located in “transgender bathrooms” in schools. Meanwhile on TikTok, one video claiming “kids are now requesting litter boxes at school” collected 3 million views on the platform.
